Description

This presentation introduces the visual book, “Drawing Thought: How drawing helps us observe, discover and invent” available in 2022 from MIT Press. The power of drawing as a tool of thought is both the medium and message of this book. Integrating hand-drawn images with text, the book investigates the practice of drawing in light of recent findings in cognitive psychology and neuroscience. Drawing is not just a way of representing things that already exist (in the world or in our minds.) It's a way of constructing ideas and observations as much as a way of expressing them. Drawing makes thinking visible. It is a tool of thought that leverages human cognition as both embodied and situated in the physical and environmental contexts in which it takes place. In “Drawing Thought,” scientific insights are interwoven with the author’s own art practice, K-16 teaching experiences, and original research into contemporary artists’ studio practices. Drawing exercises are integrated throughout so that readers can experience key concepts. The book also suggests ways that drawing can address issues of diversity, equity and inclusion. Drawing is a universal and accessible gateway into endless possibilities of thinking and making.
