Name
“Getting Good at Getting Older”: Aspects of Aging
Date & Time
Saturday, October 16, 2021, 11:40 AM - 12:30 PM
Description

The book, Getting Good at Getting Older, by Rabbi Laura Geller and her late (educator) husband, Richard Siegel, inspired a series of virtual sessions during the pandemic that my synagogue, Congregation T'chiyah (Ferndale, MI), hosted for our community and well beyond. The intention was to provide a forum for our senior members to discuss aspects of aging that create challenges but also opportunities. We offered one session per month after Rabbi Geller kicked off the series with a session in which she outlined her purposes in authoring the book: "This is a book about life, meant to empower, delight, challenge, and whet our appetite for whatever comes next." The topics we have covered so far are: Invisibility, Isolation, Purpose, and Dependency. We will resume in the fall with the following: Disability, Scams, Leaving a Legacy, Telling Your Story (Ethical Wills), and more. The field of gerontology is an interdisciplinary field, and all of the above aspects--and many more--are part of it. I will lay the groundwork in a short presentation and then encourage discussion among the participants to take a deeper dive into any of these topics or others.
