Description

"Graduate students in the Spring 2021 Introduction to Integrative Inquiry seminar at San Francisco State began their inquiries by reading Julie Thompson Klein’s 2005 book Humanities, Culture, and Interdisciplinary. When Klein visited the class, she and the students had a lively discussion about canons. The class returned to this conversation repeatedly as we examined canonical critical theories in the interdisciplinary humanities. Faced with glaring omissions and dated readings in the main text in the course, The Norton Anthology of Theory and Criticism, instructor Tanya Augsburg encouraged students to rethink existing canons in their final projects. Students proposed alternative readings in course proposals that included sample syllabi and reflections. In this panel four students will share their perspectives on canons by presenting their innovative syllabi. Moderator Tanya Augsburg will introduce the course, its students, and their final projects. Rene de Amaral will discuss her course proposal on incel culture, Ivan Iannoni will offer his thoughts about his course on metaphor and criticality, Kevin Lillich will make a case for a course on critical theory composed of readings that promote empathy and transformation, and Adam Tejada will introduce his digital literacy course proposal that critiques Q-Anon. Dr. Klein will be the respondent. "
