Description

As a possible end to the coronavirus pandemic comes into sight, the task of research can slowly shift from fighting the pandemic to remembering it. Robust databases of scientific and statistical information continue to grow, but the intangible experience of the pandemic requires a different media of record. In this paper presentation I will present the poetry of the pandemic. I will share the methods and results from a poetic representation project designed to investigate, represent, and compare the response of two communities to the onset of the 2020 coronavirus pandemic. Omaha, Nebraska, USA and Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada were selected as the sources from which to create the poems because their similar size, local geography, economy, and religious demographics despite geographical distance made them excellent candidates for comparison during this global event, and because both cities recorded their first 100 cases in almost exactly the same timeframe, 6 March to 2 April. Poems were written, each inspired by local news coverage of the happenings of the pandemic in that place at that time. The result is a chronologically ordered, geographically comparable, thoroughly researched narrative and interpretation of the first 100 coronavirus cases presented in poetic form.
