Description

"There's no denying that people are hungry and food insecure. This problem has only been amplified during the Pandemic. Recent community-campus conversations have raised questions not only about a lack of food, but an abundance of certain foods at certain times and no way to get the available food to those who need it efficient and effective ways. Food pantries and soup kitchens are stretched beyond breaking point; Senior Centers and local Ys have stepped in to meet the need, and thus have had to sacrifice enrichment and educational programming in place of feeding children and families. The concentrated, Pandemic induced, increased need for food has shone a bright light on the already wide cracks in our local and regional food systems. In this roundtable discussion, an interdisciplinary team of nutritionists, computer scientists, civil engineers, students and community leaders share our experiences when a catalyzing community event galvanized community leaders, faculty, administrators, students and alumni to address food insecurity in our neighborhoods, towns and cities. Community leaders called for a regional approach to the problem. The College rallied its resources and expertise and in close partnership with community leaders/experts embarked on a co-equal process of problem naming and systemic solution seeking. "
