Description

Interdisciplinary Education has a long and rich history that include integrated and integrative approaches (Klein, 2006). Yet, when we review them even closer, we see that in Higher Education, interdisciplinary education has been governed historically by an approach of "making space," accommodating and assimilating a variety of perspectives. The addition of the area studies as well as comparative/analysis fields of learning/studying serve as examples of the need for a great investigation into the role of diversity, equity, inclusion (DEI) and belonging in interdisciplinary education. This workshop addresses, identifies and questions this 'subtle' attitude which may implicate a superiority of what is considered mainstream. Through interdisciplinary activities including identifying DEI, mapping one's own ideas, behaviors, thoughts and perspectives using the 5 W's (who, what, where, when, why) and how we will 'investigate' the concepts and holders of privilege and power. We will 'investigate' who is being generous to whom and more. Participants will leave with a broadened view with the goal of improving visibility and inclusive theory development.
