Description

I teach an interdisciplinary, writing-focused Environmental Justice course which examines historical and contemporary issues of environmental racism. In this course, I have implemented a citizen science project in which the students collect soil samples from childcare centers to test for lead contamination, and provide a report to their community partners about their findings and recommendations. This project increases the students’ understanding of issues in the surrounding community, as well as their knowledge of scientific issues related to childhood lead exposure. In this workshop, I will share some of the benefits and challenges of integrating a citizen science project in an interdisciplinary undergraduate course. We will examine a list of ongoing national and regional citizen science projects and brainstorm other possible options. Workshop participants will discuss approaches for integrating these various projects into coursework across a wide variety of disciplines and interdisciplinary programs. Finally, each participant will be asked to develop a brief plan for implementing a citizen science project in one of their own courses, and discuss these plans in pairs in order to provide feedback, recommendations, and the encouragement to move forward with integrating hands-on, real-world scientific research in their teaching in the future.
