Faculty and students will share insights from participating in a summer research and teaching project on youth civic engagement. Two faculty members--one from political science and the other in education--and four students, one majoring in history and political science, a second majoring in biology, a third majoring in health sciences, and a fourth majoring in criminology and criminal justice, participated in the intensive summer project. The first month was devoted to researching youth civic engagement programs and civic participation around the world and training students to be facilitators in a civic engagement program implemented with middle school students at the YMCA in Lawrence, MA--a predominantly Hispanic community in which 70.7% of students were eligible for free or reduced price lunch during 2019-2020. Each panelist will discuss how their disciplinary lens was integrated into an overarching understanding of civic engagement and what they gained from working with an interdisciplinary team of instructors and students. Moreover, students and instructors represented three generations--Gen Z, Millennials, and Gen X--while students also researched generational differences in global civic participation. Reflections on the research around generational differences and how they resonate with the panelists’ experiences will also be discussed.
