"Social justice issues are inherently interdisciplinary in cause, scope, and impact. Finding answers to questions of inequality and inequity requires approaching the issues from a variety of perspectives. The participants in this roundtable include the instructor, organizers, and faculty and student participants in SSU’s annual Social Justice Week Conference and the associated course, Social Justice Organizing. We will discuss how students worked to organize a conference with over 20 events on different aspects of social justice, and how this interdisciplinary approach can create learning opportunities that are uniquely contextualized, nuanced, and thought-provoking. Social justice issues such as law enforcement use of excessive force, indigenous land rights, mental health inequities, and immigration policies are just a few examples where having interdisciplinary perspectives is integral to working towards effective social change. Drawing on a range of different disciplinary approaches helps create understanding, connections, and knowledge essential to addressing societal inequities. "
