Description

" That complexity is a primary driver of interdisciplinarity is now well established, and that a robust cognitive toolkit including such things as open-mindedness, empathy, humility and intellectual courage is required to execute rigorous interdisciplinary work is also well-established. These tools typically require human connection and develop through human interaction. In a world that has been suddenly catapulted into an asynchronous digitally dis/connected reality, these tools are at risk of becoming diminished in our intellectual, academic, and personal lives. This situation is undoubtedly prompting the need for more interdisciplinarity, but after surveying over thirty syllabi of introductory Interdisciplinary Studies syllabi, it seems that the focus has been on teaching about interdisciplinarity rather than teaching interdisciplinarity itself. I will argue that the time is ripe for this to change, and that the power and promise of interdisciplinarity lies in its capacity to foster and support the cognitive toolkit. In other words, I will argue that that heart of interdisciplinarity is the art of human connection. "
