Description

Group work can be challenging in both face-to-face and remote contexts, and synchronous and asynchronous online courses place additional barriers to successful and effective group projects. At the same time, group work provides many benefits for students, including collaboration and connection with other students, the development of team-work skills, and the opportunity to learn from peers. Finding a way to implement effective group projects in remote contexts can be a valuable piece of a comprehensive learning experience. This presentation will discuss how to implement an effective remote group project, including strategies for scaffolding and providing formative feedback; suggestions for how to assign responsibility for the work into group and individual components; how to use in-class and out-of-class time to their fullest; and how to make group projects matter, so that students feel valued. The mattering component can be the most critical, because it is a way to introduce rigor in a context that students embrace and internalize. This presentation will also address how to balance the importance of rigor and responsibility with generosity, understanding, empathy, and caring, so that students feel understood, cared for, and safe as they work.
