A PechaKucha story of work towards an interdisciplinary Digital Media Literacy (DML) certification at Sonoma State University (SSU). SSU sits at the heart of a region known for its vibrant wine country, decadent restaurants, scenic vistas, and significant wealth, generally concentrated among white residents and visitors. But this imagery masks the fact that many people of Hispanic and indigenous descent, who are integral to the region’s success and vibrancy, often live at its cultural fringes. These groups are often underrepresented in mainstream society, and their voices minimized or devalued in mainstream discourse. To help counter and mitigate these issues, we are developing a DML certificate that will cultivate digital storytelling and writing skills among youth to amplify the voices of under-served communities. We will do this through inherently generous and rigorous service-learning experiences and an expertise network involving the region’s institutions of higher education, K-12 schools, public libraries, and cultural community organizations. This utilizes intellectual and organizational tools from academia and communities. Our supporting goals are to address news deserts, both regionally and demographically, and increase DML more broadly to contribute to the creation of a media hub at SSU focused on providing DML resources and training for educators.
